It was noticed in the 1980s that light activated photosensitizers can cause photodynamic inactivation of some enveloped viruses and attempts have since been made to apply this to the treatment of virus contaminants of blood elements and plasma components. Processes such as the photoinactivation of Herpes Simplex Virus, type Ⅰ (HSV-Ⅰ) by hematoporphyrin derivative and that of Vesicalar Stromatitis Virus (VSV) by aluminum phthalocyanine have been reported.
