摆脱台式PC的束缚,新兴的手持计算设备(Handheld Device)将使Internet无处不在。自1992年世界上第一台手持计算设备问世以来,Microsoft、Apple、Philips、Motorola等越来越多的IT厂商、消费类电子厂商乃至通讯厂商竞相开发和争夺这一前景广阔的市场。IDC报告表明,1998年全球智能手持设备(个人数字助理、智能电话和掌上电脑)的销售总量已达820万台,到2001年则将达到1310万台。另据预测,2001年掌上电脑的市场规模将达到76亿美元,智能电话为58亿美元,定位于行业应用的手持设备将达到41亿美元。 采用有线或无线接入Internet的方式,从个人数字助理(Personal digital assistant,PDA)、电子图书(E-book)、MP3播放器、掌上电脑(Palmsize Personal Computer,PPC)到WAP手机,都在力求承诺让消费者随时随地和更加方便地获得信息和娱乐。 在中国市场上,从1998年起,联想、方正、海信、胜利、恒生等IT厂商陆续进军手持计算设备市场。2000年4月下旬,Motorola(中国)有限公司和联想科技公司掌中网事业部在青岛召开代理商大会,向与会者传达了一个强烈的讯息:Motorola宝典828将以“掌中网机”的形象加大在中国市场的推进力度。2000年5月9日,联想电脑公司又在京宣布将着手开发嵌入式Linux操作系统……
Out of the shackles of a desktop PC, the emerging handheld device will make the Internet ubiquitous. Since the world’s first handheld computing device was introduced in 1992, more and more IT vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, Philips and Motorola, consumer electronics manufacturers and even telecommunications vendors have been competing to develop and compete for this promising market. The IDC report shows that the global sales of smart handheld devices (personal digital assistants, smart phones and PDAs) totaled 8.2 million units in 1998 and 13.1 million in 2001. It is also predicted that in 2001 the market size of handheld computers will reach 7.6 billion U.S. dollars, smart phones will be 5.8 billion U.S. dollars, and handsets located in industrial applications will reach 4.1 billion U.S. dollars. In late April 2000, Motorola (China) Co., Ltd. and Legend Technology Corp.’s Palm Network division held a conference in Qingdao to send a strong message to attendees: Motorola Collection 828 will take the image of “Palm Network Machine” Big push in the Chinese market. May 9, 2000, Lenovo Computer in Beijing announced that it will embark on the development of embedded Linux operating system.
