In the background of the postwar American social changes in the United States, the novel tells the story of Miss Trammel Emily, a tragic life. As a woman, Emily underwent all kinds of oppression from a patriarchal society and finally ended her lonely and miserable life in solitary confinement. This paper tries to analyze the symbolic meaning of the heroine Emily’s character and her tragic life from the perspective of feminism and the causes of her tragedy.
