Some of tin organic compounds are excellent plasticizers or stabilizers. Japan’s Matsuda et al. Have recently reported a new method for the direct synthesis of functional group-containing alkyl halides, following the direct synthesis of alkyltin halides from tin and halocarbons [Journal of Industrial Chemistry, 63, 114 (1960)]. The reaction is: The halogen and the functional group can be on any carbon atom in C_nH_ (2n), and also suitable for the halogen of two or more functional groups. R is alkyl or aryl. The catalyst is a mixture of small amounts of metallic magnesium, iodinated alkanes and tetrahydrofuran (or n-butanol) and the like. The reaction is simple, high yield. For example, 68 grams (0.4 mole) of beta-bromopropionate, 20 grams (0.17 mole) tin foil, 0.1 gram of magnesium foil, 0.5 milliliters of C_4H_9I, 2 milliliters
