多媒体是相对于单媒体而言的,以前的个人电脑只能处理文字和数字,这就是单媒体。现在,随着计算机和硬件和软件的发展,个人电脑不仅能处理文字和数字,而且还能处理图像、文本、音频、视频等多种媒介,能将计算机、电视机、录像机、录音机和游戏机等技术融为一体,形成电脑与用户之间可以相互交流的操作环境。不久的将来,多媒体计算机便可收看电视、录像、打可视电话、发传真。多媒体技术在家庭中的应用将使人们在家上班成为现实。
