Advanced Launch System (ALS) program targets require an order of magnitude lower cost than existing launch vehicle propulsion systems. Research shows that reusable engines are more cost-effective than single-use propulsion systems. Earlier studies quantified the sensitivity of operating costs and costs to variable quantities of engine production and operation. The rationale for ALS production and operation has raised the potential for operational, adaptively adapted launch vehicle propulsion systems. The assumptions and established principles that were taken during the initial planning of the ALS phases of operation, with emphasis on the changes required to complete such a system.
