The authors studied the purification of catecholamines in biological samples prior to HPLC analysis to simplify their procedures and increase their sensitivity and recovery. Compounds having 1,2-diol groups readily form complexes with borates. Complexes of catecholamines with appropriate borates can be efficiently adsorbed to the stationary phase or extracted into organic solvents. This article describes the effects of different borates, buffers and their pH, solvent extraction on the extraction of 4 catecholamines including dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine and 1-dopa using HPLC with a fluorescence detector.
