-The variations of Walker Circulation and the relationship with the El Nino events are examined on the basis of surface wind data. The zonal circulation cell over the eastern equatorial Pacific tends to contract (expand) in an El Nino year (anti-El Nino year). The variations of zonal circulation over the Indian Ocean are reversed, it expands in an El Nino year and contracts in an anti-El Nino year. Analysis shows great importance of the overturn in the Central Pacific. A version of the Walker Circulation scheme is developed in considering the meridional wind divergence. Indices of Walker Circulation and meridional circulation are worked out. The relationship of the indices to the SST, SOI and subtropical high are studied.
