1988年8月,省委书记林若同志来到南雄检查造林绿化和水土流失整治工作,指示“一定要把红砂岭全面披绿”。根据省委、省政府提出的“五年消灭荒山,十年绿化广东大地”的战略决策和林若书记的重要指示,南雄县委、县政府作出了“三年消灭荒山、五年绿化南雄、八年治理水土流失”的重要决定。至此,南雄大地掀起了新一轮消灭荒山、治理水土流失的高潮。
