Observational studies and seismicity Using seismographs arranged in section C, we were able to monitor near earthquakes in New Zealand. Before 1981, it was thought that only seismometers of magnitude ML≥ 4.0 could be identified by seismographs. Although this is a very low cut-off value, it has been tried since 1982 to determine ML≥3.8 earthquakes. The farther away from the station, the greater the threshold that can be determined. All these seismic data are sent periodically to the International Seismological Center.
