《隋书·经籍志》著录《毛诗义》、《毛诗笺传是非》是魏秘书郎刘瑶所作。姚振宗《隋书经籍志考证》说刘瑶生平不详。刘毓庆和牟玉亭根据《三国志·魏书·刘靖传》认为刘璠是荆州刺史刘弘之子。然《晋阳秋》载刘弘生活在西晋,《晋书》所载刘弘及其子刘瑶亦西晋时人,且并无此刘璠在《诗》学方面成就的任何记载。则魏秘书郎刘璠与荆州刺史刘弘之子刘璠并非一人。
