决斗作为在西方上流社会流行的残酷风习,最早兴起于中世纪,一开始具有浓厚基督色彩。17世纪以后经过中世纪骑士文化的熏陶和“十字军运动”的鼓舞,决斗风潮席卷整个英国和欧洲大陆。法国、英国、德国等国家纷纷制定和颁布决斗法典约束决斗事件的发生。这股决斗大潮18世纪还随着彼得大帝的改革进入俄国并在上流社会流行开来。19世纪末,随着社会文明的进步和生命意识、人权意识的高涨,决斗在欧洲基本销声匿迹。
