西瓜是典型的异花授粉植物。自然授粉和通过蜂媒授粉效果大不相同。一般情况下单瓜重5￣6 kg,折光糖含量11%左右,每公顷产量60.0 t左右,而经蜂媒授粉单瓜重7￣9 kg,折光糖含量18%左右,每公顷产量97.6 t,坐果率由原来的85%增加到近100%,畸形果率(2 kg以下的果体)原为5%,经蜂媒授粉后几乎为0。每0.667 hm2(10亩)地投放1强群(13脾蜂)蜂为其授粉较为合适。且群均产蜂蜜33.0kg,蜂王浆1.0 kg,花粉5.5 kg;繁蜂几乎翻一番。
