汉代朐忍县与唐之云安、分之云阳绝然不可等同视之。对于“古朐忍山有大小石城势”之说，历代志书及注家们说解不一，且渐有变化，然多揣测而少考据。根据现今实地踏勘所得资料结合史籍记载考辨，万州天城山应为大石城山，云阳盘石城乃为小石城山。但由于军事需要，至迟在南宋时期，古朐忍境内的大小石城山实际上已成为了名符其实的大小两座石城。
