Introduction There are a large number of neutral, calc-alkaline plutons in the Andes of central and northern Chile, but only a very small proportion of them are associated with porphyry copper deposits. This article explores the possibility of using a whole-rock geochemical approach to assess the potential of an intruded or complex body in the absence of significant hydrothermal alteration or mineralization. The study was based on analysis of more than 30 major elements and trace elements from about 100 industrial and non-industrial invaders and the review was examined within three scales: (1) in a mining area, El Salvador de Puerto Rico in central and northern Chile
