This article analyzes the design of a new type of tape transport system. This design has been developed on a professional stereo recorder. With the exception of a few mechanical moving parts and five light sensors, the entire operation is electronically controlled. A microcomputer system controls all transport functions, including multi-point listening devices. This is done via a computer-based keyboard with nine memories. The design discussed in this article has the characteristics of constant tape tension and several advanced properties.
