The Duchess and Jeweler is a spicy social satirical novel. It concisely and exaggerated comic brushwork depicts the relationship between a commercial upstart and a declining aristocratic and exploitative and mutually dependent and interdependent. She needed his money - a material advantage; he needed her hereditary socio-political status - a spiritual advantage that he could not replace but buy with the wealth of the world. In portraying these two characters, the author uses a series of images of animals and objects - big pigs, truffles, elephants, camels, peacocks, parasols, snow leopards, and bird eggs. She also used the stream of consciousness and montage techniques to overprint the images of today’s big jewelers and former poor boys and girls alike so that this social theme novel has a different originality from the traditional social fiction that is straightforward. A short story of a few pages seems to highlight a bright spot on the broad background of British modern history and condense the long struggle and eventual compromise between the British bourgeoisie and the feudal aristocracy.
