古代一些为官清正,为民着想的官员,常常自撰楹联,以明心志,并以自励。明代吏部尚书王恕,为官清廉,任人唯贤,曾题联悬于吏部大堂:仕于朝者,以馈遗及门为耻仕于外者,以苞苴入都为羞“馈遗”、“苞苴”都是指贿赂。他以此联告诫人们,切莫以贿赂买官卖官,并以此自律。据明史载:“弘治二十年间,众正盈朝……恕力也。”清代潘先珍,任蓬溪县令时,在县衙堂上自题一联:
