(John Filson)
Based on a recent survey of earthquakes near Leninakan in Armenia, the Soviet Union, scientists have begun to provide information that will help inform future earthquakes in the region, one of the most earthquake-prone and populous parts of the world. An earthquake engineer concluded that the history of earthquakes in the area was a factor in the number of earthquake deaths, saving 25,000 people from the quake but possibly more deaths. James De-wey of the National Center for Earthquake Intelligence said the “multi-epicenter earthquake” is based on the seismic waveforms generated by the main shock. The American team, which was formed under a direct agreement between the American Academy of Sciences and the Soviet Academy of Sciences, was founded by seismologist John Filson of the United States Geological Survey in Reston, Va.
