Because of its close connection with industrial production and its modernist and minimalist style in some of his works, Christopher Dreiser is regarded as a pioneer of modern design in the narratives of most modern design history. And his personal rich experience, and the correlation of these experiences with all aspects of Britain in the nineteenth century, have received less attention. This article attempts to re-evaluate Dreiser’s multiple identities by reevaluating Dreiser’s status as a pioneer of modern design and to explore the linkages between design practices and the design industry and design markets in the specific historical context of the 19th century.
