比时速270km的JR东海新干线“希望号”以及时速300km的法国TGV速度更高的350km/h的JR西日本新一代高速新干线WIN350试验车将于1994年春问世。该500系WIN350电车为了减少空气阻力,头车外观采用尖形、低车顶的新颖美观的设计,更新了过去电车的模式,而且为了减小噪声、振动,达到完全轻量化,车体采用铝合金结构,转向架采用结构简单、轻型的无摇枕转向架。此外,每一辆车的输出功率提高到300系新干线希望号的1.6倍。1~3号车由川崎重工兵库工场制造,3~6号车由日立制作所笠户工场制造。
