今年四月份,胡启立同志随同胡耀邦总书记访问澳大利亚,在4月17日的一次宴会上,他用英语发表了讲话,对新南威尔士州政府和人民的热情接待表示感谢,对同澳大利亚的互利合作寄予厚望。领导同志在外交场合讲外语,给予我们很多的联想和启示。我自然联想到,中学设置外语课是非常必要的。十一届三中全会以来,我国实行对外开放政策,跟各国交往日益频繁,如果相互之间语言不通,会给国际交往带来不少困难。我们应使中学生掌握一定的外语知识,今后他们无论是升大学,还是就业,都能继续学习外语,运用外语这个语言交际工具来
