1906年3月27日,浙江绍兴嵊州市甘霖镇东王村的农民将门板铺在稻桶上,搭成简易戏台,说唱艺人们登台演戏,作为中国一个新剧种的越剧从此诞生。2006年3月26日,百年越剧纪念活动在嵊州举行,活动包括百年越剧回顾展、百年越剧纪念大会“梨园经典——越剧百年畅想”座谈会、越乡民营剧团优秀剧目展演以及丰富多彩的戏迷活动等,同时还有“越剧大巴”百村万里行活动,“越剧大巴”从嵊州出发开赴杭州,在浙江省人民大会堂广场进行演出。著名越剧表演艺术家袁雪芬、徐玉兰、吕瑞英、金采风、范瑞娟、王文娟等特意赶来参加这一活动,老艺术家的光临在嵊州戏迷中引起了强烈反响。
