我县是福州市西瓜供给的重要基地之一。为了发挥我县山多优势,积极开发山地,大力推广西瓜上山,面积逐年扩大,1984年750亩,占西瓜种植面积的25.2％.到1988年全县山地种瓜面积达10200亩,占种瓜总面积的87.2％。山地西瓜栽培欲获得成功,应围绕“早”字实施各项技术措施。一、选用早、中熟品种我县一般在6月下旬雨季结束,进入高温旱季,山地西瓜必须在7月上旬前头瓜采收基本结束.所以,品种应选雌花着生节位低、间隔节数少、易座果、长势强、耐湿抗病的早、中熟品种,如新澄一号、新红宝、建杂一号等较为理想.全生育期约100～115天.单瓜重可达6～8公斤。
