In the past,Xiao Hou Cang Lane looked like a large miscellaneous compound,tattered andcrowded.The renovation project must on the one hand preserve the characteristics of houses inBeijing,and on the other hand meet the demand for housing of all the residents living in the laneand overcome the funding problem.This article gives a brief account of how these problem wereresolved when this project was completed.If the purpose of the redevelopment project in Long Xu Gou launched by the Beijing Muni-cipality in 1940s was to rescue the poor residents from the slum,the renovation of dangerous oldhouses in the old town of Beijing must not only ease the shortage of housing,but also raise theliving standard and improve the living environment.The renovation project of dangerous housesin Xiao Hou Cang lane is an important attempt by West District Authority of Beijing to improvethe housing standard in the old town.
