“Two Cultures ” (2001) L. Breiman, a statistician from the University of California, Berkeley, has served as a statistical consultant to various organizations and brings new and important clues to the science of statistics. In his dissertation, Statistics Modeling: Two Cultures, “describes two cultural perspectives on how to get value from data. The Generative Modeling culture seeks to develop a stochastic model that fits data, and then deduces the data generation mechanism based on the schema of these models. The culture assumes that there is a real data generation model, and there is usually a ”best" way to analyze the data. Breiman thinks 98% of statisticians agree with this culture.
