出版社的特色,主要靠图书的特色来体现,而图书的特色,主要靠选题设计来实现。因此,为了出好具有特色的图书,从而形成和突出出版社的特色,在选题设计时,就不能忽视政治方向。政治方向是选题设计的大方向。在新的历史时期,邓小平同志建设有中国特色的社会主义理论,是我们一切工作的根本指针。为人民服务、为社会主义服务、为两个文明建设服务,是出版工作的根本方向。这个根本指针和根本方向,就是出版社一切工作的大方向。这个大方向出了偏差,就会产生误导,甚至捅大漏子,出大问题,犯大错误,但是也不能忘记自己这个出版社的基本出书方向(或专业分工),这实际上就是指出版社的特色。一段时期来,这个方向被严重地忽视了。一些出版社在选题设计上,虽说大方向没出大问题,但忽视了自己的基本出书方向和专业分工,不顾自己的专业优势、编辑特长,似乎什么样的选题都可设计,什么种类的图书都可出版。有的非自己所长的选题,占到年选题种数的60％以上。结果不仅图书的质量得不到保证,而且影响了本专业图书的出版,还在社会上造成大量的重复读物,加大了宏观
