Modelling is a useful method for studying and improving trawls. It is possible to design models to satisfy similarity conditions. Satisfactory test results were obtained according to the Froude and Newton criteria of similarity. Four models of a Chinese pair trawl -were tested and found to satisfy these conditions.The Reynolds number was less than 103 for all the models and the effect of Reynolds number on the beha-viour of the model was calculated using published data on the variation of the drag coefficient of asmooth cylinder with Reynolds number.The trawl drag was found to be nearly independent of shape of the trawl mouth.
