社会需求是情报研究纵深发展的基本动力,其满足程度,又是评价情报研究效率的客观尺度。面对社会情报需求对情报研究服务提出的针对性、有效性、预见性和能动性的挑战,一些研究课题和建设项目涉及的经济、社会、军事、法律、生态环境、气象变化、发展远景等一系列因素,仅靠用语言文字作静态表述的文献型情报研究成果势必难以准确反映,由此也就暴露出现时常规情报研究工作方法与手段的某些局限性。情报研究工作要得以突破与创新,有待于工作层次的不断深化和研究方法的日益丰富,冲破封闭式和经院式的框框,打破单一的文献格局,吸收现代技术,才能强化其功能,使情报研究真正成为科技成果应用于社会的桥梁和纽带。
