《论语》记录了孔子的言行,是研究孔子思想的主要根据.但记录者不是一个人,记录也不系统.有的篇章比较长.内容较详尽.几乎可以作为小说来读;有的短得无头无尾.甚至不能成句.限于古时的书写条件.遣词造句尽量从简,又没有标点之法,因而有些章句读起来就令人费解了.《泰伯》篇“子曰民可使由之不可使知之”章由于句读的不同,导致对孔子思想的铨释不同.本文拟对这一个问题作一些讨论.传统的句读是;“子曰:民可使由之,不可使知之.”(朱熹《四书集註》)按照其字面来理解,意思是很明显的.于是,批孔者抓住这两句话,认为是孔子专制思想的典型表现.指责孔子主张推行愚民政策.大加挞伐.尊孔者或避而不谈.或惋惜地称之为孔子思想中的自我矛盾,或是保守思想的表现.孔子的原意是不是这样的呢?宋儒早有看法.朱熹引程子曰:“圣人设教,非不欲人家喻而户晓也.然不能使之知.但能使之由之尔.若曰圣人不使民知.则是后世朝三暮四之术也,岂圣人之心乎!”(见同上)认为孔子原意并不是不使
