On October 31, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon nominated Shauf Mohafaz, former chief of staff of the Allied Defense Forces, as Defense Minister and won Parliament’s approval on November 4 to replace previously resigned Labor leader Ben Elias. Shaul Mufaz, the chief of general staff of the Israeli army, who left his post in early July this year, is 64 years old and was born in Tehran, capital of Iran. At the age of 9, he moved to Israel with his parents. At the age of 18, he joined the Israel Defense Forces as a paratrooper in the Third Middle East War of 1967. At the outbreak of the Fourth Middle East War in 1973, Moçasz has taken an outstanding battle, becoming a commander of the Israeli elite paratrooper forces. He also participated in the operation to rescue the hostages in Thousands of miles of running in Entebbe airport in Uganda in 1976. When the Israeli army attacked Lebanon in 1982, Moças was the infantry brigade commander under Secretary of Defense Sharon at the time. Since then, Moçarfazi has been working hard to build the Israeli army into the most powerful armed force in the Middle East. He served as Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army for a total of four years in 1999, and stepped down from office in July this year, replacing General Moses Al-Ahon.
