Speaker Zhan Xiaohong, a researcher at the Institute of Economic Research of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, currently lectures at the Chinese Department of North Korea University in South Korea. In this article, he described the economic relationship between China and South Korea, which continued to heat up in the 11 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. In 2003, China overtook the United States as Korea’s largest exporter of commodities. From January to October 2003, South Korea’s exports to China reached 27.8 billion U.S. dollars, South Korea’s trade surplus was 10 billion U.S. dollars, South Korea’s exports to the United States over the same period were 27.5 billion U.S. dollars, and South Korea’s trade surplus was 7 billion U.S. dollars. As a result, China has become Korea’s largest trade surplus country. At the same time, China’s cheap labor force, excellent infrastructure, stable political and economic environment are all of great appeal to Korean companies. It is reported that nearly 10 million Korean workers employed companies intend to go to China to invest and set up factories. According to official statistics of South Korea, 959 of the 1,296 foreign investments in South Korea made inroads into China in the first three quarters of 2003 accounted for 77% of the total. China has become Korea’s largest foreign investor. In addition, China has also become the most desirable place for tourist population in South Korea. In 2003, a total of 13.13 million Korean tourists traveled to China, including 460,000 business trips, which was twice as large as 230,000 trips from South Korea to Japan. China’s importance to South Korea’s economy has become increasingly prominent. Former Samsung president once said: “The per capita GDP of South Korea will increase from the current 10,000 U.S. dollars to 20,000 U.S. dollars in the next 10 years, depending on two points. The first is IT industry development, the second is whether the Chinese market. ”
