都柳江发源于贵州独山县的更顶山,是柳江的上游。老堡以上到贵州称都柳江,老堡以下到柳城称融江,这条横跨广西、贵州边界的水量充沛的大河是过去从广州逆江而上进入贵州的重要水道,从广西柳州到贵州的古洲(榕江县的古称)河段过去被称为黄金小道。各种物资从这条水道一直可以运到贵州黔东南,黔东南及广西三江等地的桐油、木材,竹子也要顺着这条水道运出。后来随着沿江321国道的修通,这条水道已显得不是那么重要,现在这条江除了留下了古商水道的历史烙印之外,还有纯正的侗族风情和美丽的自然风光。
