Gallbladder cancer is the most common malignant lesions of the biliary tract, its onset of occult, high degree of malignancy, the prognosis is poor. Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis, is a member of the apoptosis-inhibitory protein family. It has a unique biological behavior and plays an important role in the regulation of apoptosis, proliferation and cell cycle. The overexpression of Survivin gene is closely related to the pathogenesis of gallbladder cancer, and its expression may be used as one of the effective indicators to judge the biological behavior and prognosis of gallbladder cancer. This review summarizes new insights into the molecular biology of Survivin, including its basic structure, tissue distribution and antiapoptotic effects, and its clinical implications for aberrant expression in gallbladder carcinomas.
