Key words: vocabulary teaching; strategy; acquisition
Introduction
Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings. It directly influences the development of language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. As what Wilkins said, in human communication , if there is no grammar, very little information can be transmitted ; without vocabulary, no information can be possibly transmitted.
1. The disadvantages of English vocabulary teaching
From the present situation of English vocabulary research, vocabulary has been the biggest barrier of language skill development. Vocabulary teaching makes up half or more teaching time, leaving training and improving language skills and language awareness no sufficient time to reach the English Curriculum Standards. Students have been in a passive learning, so the students often feel bored and forget the memorized words quickly. Students are afraid of learning English and lose interest.
2.The present situation of the vocabulary teaching research
At home, in 1983 , Lu Guoqiang published "Up-to-date English Lexicology Study". Later Lin Fumei’s "Up-to-date English Glossary" was published; Wang Rongpei published "English Glossary Study Course" and so on. At abroad, From 1940s to the 60s, the structural teaching method was very popular for a while. M. Tang encouraged students to look into the internal structure of the vocabulary.
3.vocabulary teaching strategies
3.1 Memory strategy
Memory strategy can help students learn to memorize words, to have the target to store active vocabulary and use vocabulary in the context effectively. There are several ways to memorize words: we can put some words with the same letters together, for example: require, acquire, request and so on.
3.2 Guessing Strategy
Guessing strategy is a learning strategy. It is very important for teachers to help students master guessing strategy in order to improve their foreign languages learning efficiency. Some studies have shown that guessing strategy is an effective method. 3.3 Semantic strategy
According to the word semantics, carrying on the word organization can make the students more clearly to the semantic relations of the related vocabulary, is good for remembering and understanding of these words. Here are some semantic relationships. Such as synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy.
3.4Game strategy
In classroom teaching, the appropriate use of the word game can stimulate the students’ interest in learning and the results are obvious. For example: computer-road-dress-sister-rice-elephant Another example is the teacher write a very short word on the blackboard. The next word must be one longer than the original word, while allowing the replacement of any one of the letters, but not allowed to change the first letter. For example:
he-her-here-heart mouth-month-mother
3.5 Contextual analysis strategy
Contextual analysis strategy involves inferring the meaning of a strange word by the text. Research suggests that memorizing words in the specific context is much more effective than a single non-associated memory. When a teacher teaches words, they should not separate words from sentences, and the examples certainly must be vivid, interesting and closely related to the students’ real life so as to be able to deepen the impression. Furthermore, the teachers should guide the students to guess the meaning of the words according to the clues in order to prevent the students from developing a habit of looking up in the dictionary whenever they encounter new words and improve their reading speed.
4 Conclusions
Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects in language learning and language teaching. Luckily for language teachers and learners, not all English words must be learned. We do not have time to teach all words,so English teachers has to be focused on building the students’ initial vocabulary, developing the students’ understanding of what learning words means, showing the learner how to learn the words more effectively. The ultimate aim, of course, is to develop the students as independent word learners. For further discussion, the drawbacks of different vocabulary strategies need to be found to help teachers and students teach and learn vocabulary more effectively and successfully.
