Oinghaosu, developed by Chinese scientists,is a new type of antimalarial drug with quickeffect and low toxicity.Since its solubility inwater or oil is very low,it cannot be made intoa clear injection to be given intramuscularly orintravenously for emergency use. However, thedrug given per rectum is absorbed directly bythe middle and inferior rectal veins, bypassingthe portal veins of the liver and so avoiding des-truction of the drug in the liver. In this waythe drug can be highly efficient and quick-acting.
