坦克用发动机与工业用发动机有所不同,它对发动机的性能指标和结构紧凑性都有特殊要求。近年来,由于科学技术的发展,使得功率在250～800马力范围内两种用途的机型有可能通用。最新研制的坦克要求发动机的功率要提高到1500马力,比重量为1公斤/马力,比容积为1升/马力。目前已在工业用发动机基本结构不变的基础上,发展了一种超高增压发动机。
