Most domestic scholars think he is a writer and navigator, but he does not know much about his “world history” and his humanist view of history. He wrote five volumes of “World History” published in Britain and continental Europe after a century or so, as the 17th century university textbooks. This article discusses Riley ’s humanistic view of history on the basis of analyzing the text of World History. Riley’s view of history was formed in the early modern era, leaving traces of the obvious medieval history thoughts in his writings.
