本市塘大区的工人业余学校是去年十一月间开始组织的,到现在已经六个月了。截止到目前,共建立了正规的工人业余学校二○处,一三二班,吸收了五一四二工人和在职干部入学。其中以学校为主的有一一处,七六班,二九九四人;以工厂为主的九处,五六班,二一四八人。教员现有二二四人,专任一九人,兼任二○五人;另有专业干部一二人。学员的成份,包括在职干部三四二人,产业工人三○○○人左右;其他为码头工人,搬运工人,海员工人,盐出工人和三百名左右的普通市民。依照目前发展情况,已超过了塘大区本年度吸收五千工人和在职干部入学的计划。学员人数占塘大区现有工人总数的百分之三十强。产业工人学员约为现有产业工人总数百分之五十弱。目前,各业校已经由发展的阶段进入巩固的阶段。一般地,都组织起了领导机构,建立起来各种制度;并且通过学员们自己的讨论,制定了学习公约、教室公约等,在学员自己互助督促之下,共同遵守。学员的学习情绪很高,一般都自觉地认真来学习,经常出席上课的由百分之七十到九十。学习成绩,也有相当进步,特别是在算术方面:如永利碱厂工人杜先和,
