《史记》是作者司马迁一生的经历及不幸遭遇，使他在客观地记述历史时，表现出了与封建正统思想相悖迕的进步的人民性：在用朴素唯物史观稽考社会历史时，他认识到了人民群众的伟大作用；在效法“春秋笔法”藏否历史、褒贬人物时，他对封建统治者进行了揭露和批判，对广大人民给予了同情和歌颂；在搜集考信材料、运用语言文字以及确定纪传人物时，他流露出了对劳动人民重视、信赖和褒扬的思想感情。尽管《史记》人民性有很大的局限性，但它却是《史记》菁华之所在。
