An Imaginary Life describes the successful construction of a new cultural identity by the ancient Roman poet Ovid in exile, with a watershed significance in the literary career of the Australian novelist David Malouf. This article analyzes the sense of exile in this work from three aspects: the poet exile beyond the language boundary, the field where I am entering my self, and how I live in real life. Vader’s exile was threefold: he experienced language exile, spiritual exile and cultural identity in exile. At the same time, it also points out that Ovide’s novel’s experience of extricating himself from exile and reconstructing the cultural identity construction is actually an Australian experience. The success of Ovide’s novels shows that the way to go out of exile may be to give local experience a sense of realism.
