In the 1995 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the trait of malt was described as “...the basal radicles give rise to young shoots and fibrous roots. The young shoots are long and lanceolate, about 0.5 cm long, and have several fibrous roots. They are slender and curved.” The traits of rice buds are described as “...a 1-3 lengths of curved roots extending from the inside of a paddle, 0.5-1.2 cm long.” After several tests of malt and rice buds, the author found that the description was a bit defective. It is thought that the description of malt should be “...a few fibrous roots at the basal radicle, fine and curved, 0.2-2.0 cm long, and yellow-brown buds about 0.5 cm long at the upper end.”
