5月19日,中贸圣佳国际拍卖公司召开新闻发布会,宣布将推出“也是集——钱钟书书信手札专场”研讨会。随后,包括钱钟书、杨绛、钱瑗书信及手稿等共计百余件作品将于6月被拍卖。5月26日,杨绛先生对此事发表声明,希望有关人士和拍卖公司立即停止侵权,否则“将会亲自走向法庭,维护自己和家人的合法权利”。面对杨绛的强烈反对,拍卖公司没有叫停拍卖,反而表示拍卖时间将提前一天,定于6月21日。于是,舆论哗然,聚焦文化道德操守问题。
