制作大块 VLSI 芯片是十分困难的,AT&T 公司提出了一种成功开发这种芯片、并确保其精度的方法。设计 VLSI 芯片的过程相当复杂。所需的技术难度远超过一般硬件或软件设计所提出的要求。设计人员一般必须通过执行大量软件来掌握各种概念和复杂功能。除软件仿真以及类似的技术用于 VLSI 设计外,其它与软件无关的技术,如硅片布局和定时分析都必须确保执行成功。由于在硅片生产线上定制一 VLSI 芯片需几个月的时间,故最初的设计一定不能出错。
Making large VLSI chips is difficult, and AT & T has come up with a way to successfully develop the chip and ensure its accuracy. The process of designing a VLSI chip is quite complicated. The required technical difficulty far exceeds that required by the general hardware or software design. Designers generally have to master a wide range of concepts and complex functions by executing a large amount of software. In addition to software simulation and similar technologies for VLSI design, other software-independent technologies, such as silicon layout and timing analysis, must ensure successful execution. Since it takes months to customize a VLSI chip in a silicon production line, the original design must not fail.
