蜂窝夹层结构是在两个薄蒙皮(Face—plate)之间,夹上轻质芯材(core material)的一种层合复合材料。在机能方面,与在钢轨上可见的工字型断面梁相似。即工字型断面材料的两凸缘与蒙皮对应,承担弯曲应力。工字型断面材料的腹板与芯材对应,专门承担横向剪切,每—个的作用都分得很清楚。
