The Archives Guide is an important reference tool for a comprehensive and concise introduction of archives and the files they hold. Since its establishment in 1934, the National Archives of the United States has published a total of six versions of archives guides. Less than three years after its establishment, in June 1937, it published its first guide, the Appendix of the Third Annual Report of the Director of the National Archives of the United States, “The National Archives of the United States Material Guide. ” This guide includes about 250,000 feet of documents opened from December 1935. Three years later, in 1940, another guide to the National Archives Materials replaced the first one. The new guidelines provide a more detailed account of about 320,000 feet of documents opened from December 31, 1939. During the Second World War, the archives of the National Archives in the United States doubled their collection, thus requiring new reference tools to more accurately reflect the composition of the archives. As a result, the museum published another concise guidebook in 1946 for the general public. This guide, titled “Government Archives of the National Archives,” presents an overview of the 700,000-cubic-foot archives contained in the museum.
