孔子教授弟子于现实生活中所呈露的仁当下体证仁之为人的本质,孟子则强调由“亲亲”之情所呈露的仁的端倪渐次扩充而达于至仁,由观孺子入井所呈露的善的端倪渐次扩充而达于至善,以孔子、孟子为代表的原始儒学开创并笃守了以践证、体证为特征的儒学心性论德性进路。在东周时期礼坏乐崩、崇尚实功实利的社会背景下,原始儒学心性论德性进路因其形而上的特征而遭遇了普世化困境,儒家文化始终局限在学术团体的范围内。到了战国中后期,荀子儒学的德性进路已经发生了显著转变。荀子儒学以认知的路径将德性视作一种“应然”的经验知识,个人在学习经验知识的基础上通过“化性起伪”的人文化过程而实现人的德性价值。荀子特别强调礼作为一种外在规范对人性的制约作用,以及习俗对“化性起伪”的潜移默化的意义。先秦儒学德性进路的转变对两汉到北宋初期儒学的发展产生了重要的影响,以认知的方式将人性分为不同的品级是该时期儒学人性论的显著特征。随着北宋时期儒学心性论的兴起,儒家文化的心性论德性进路与认知性德性进路产生了激烈的交锋,尊孟派与疑孟派关于孟子思想的争论,本质上是儒家文化两种德性进路的分歧。
