BMR
During the 1979-1980 West expedition to Antarctica, a BMR geologist published new insights into the relationship between Antarctica and the paleogeology of Australia, based on field work. Recognizing the growing strategic and economic importance of Antarctica and the continent’s borders in 1978, the Federal Republic of Germany became a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty and has since embarked on an ambitious scientific study. For the past 30 years, BMR has conducted a geological and geophysical survey of Antarctica, gaining valuable experience in the special technologies needed for the work in Antarctica. The first official West Antarctic expedition (GANOVEX 1979-80 German Antarctic North Victoria expedition) conducted a full geology study and was used as part of the West German Common BMR (Bendesäte fur Geseissens chaften und Roh stoffe, BGR) The results of the discussion were systematically elaborated.
