The carbothermal reduction of ilmenite and rutile is of great importance in industrial production for the production of artificial rutile and titanium carbide and titanium nitride by the Becher method. The different valences of mixed titanium oxides are increasingly important for the production of catalysts, bio-coatings, wear resistant surfaces, conductive ceramics, and electrode materials.
