In China, laws that mandate equal educational opportunities for boys and girls have been established. However, whilst compulsory, the actual implementation of the Law was to be carried out in different phases depending on the level of socioeconomic development and local conditions (Mackerras, 2003, p.126). This article adopts a critical perspective to talk about gender relations in China and their impact on Chinese education.
